The Understory: Building a Botanical Color Foundation

$110.00

A full-day natural dye workshop

Every deep color has a history. Before the overdye, there is a first layer, brilliant on its own but spectacular with an overdye. This is that layer.

In this full-day, hands-on workshop we'll explore the botanical spectrum between gold and crimson, dyeing on wool and silk with yellows and reds drawn from dried rabbitbrush harvested here on the farm and sourced botanical dyes. Each plant has its own personality, its own relationship with fiber and mordant, and its own story to tell in the pot. We'll cover mordanting for protein fibers, dye bath preparation, how temperature and time shape your final color, and the quiet, transformative moment when you lift wet fiber from a bath and see what the plant gave you.

This workshop can stand beautifully on its own - a complete exploration of warm botanical color from first mordant to finished skein. It also pairs directly with Over Blue, our natural indigo workshop the following day, where these same yellows and reds meet the vat and shift into new territory entirely, olive, teal, violet.

You'll leave this workshop with a set of botanically dyed skeins, a reference sheet of the day's recipes and notes, and a sense of how plant color can stand alone or be layered.

No prior dye experience required.

Supply fee includes. yarns (4 skeins of wool yarn and 4 skeins of silk yarn), dyestuffs and all supplies. There are two yarn bundles to choose from.

Wear clothes that could get stained or dirty and bring something for taking notes.

All levels of dyers welcome.

25 yd skein bundle - $45. Includes four 25 yd premordanted skeins of wool yarn and four 25 yd premordanted skeins of silk yarn.
